We held a workshop on the PBL courses.

To share the result of the PBL courses offered in the 2013 academic year and have discussions on the future PBL courses, we invited the collaborating instructors from the U.S. universities and held a workshop.

The instructors and students who partook in GSP376 (jointly offered with Oregon State University), ECN376 (jointly offered with San Francisco State University) and INT231 (offered by AIU) gave reports on their respective courses and answered questions by the instructors who will be teaching the PBL courses in the future.

While the supervising instructors of the PBL courses addressed issues such as the challenge of recruiting students for the course depending on whether credits can be counted toward completion of their majors and the extra burden of preparing field activities that require travels between Japan and the U.S., a number of positive opinions were expressed about the bright potential of collaborative education programs. These include the educational effectiveness of the PBL courses that emphasize the learning process of the students and global awareness nurtured through comparatively studying the cultural differences between Japan and the U.S., etc.

Although the initial two-day schedule of the workshop was reduced to a day due to inclement weather, the event still enabled the instructors from Japan and the U.S. to come together and review how best to administer the PBL courses in the future.
