Preliminary instructions before participating in the study-abroad program were provided.

Preliminary instructions were given to the students of the University that would be participating in the study-abroad program.

The University recruited students who would be willing to relocate to Oregon State University (OSU) in January 2013 to take the PBL course, and five were chosen through the screening process. These students have been gathering at the office of Dr. Kumagai, Professor once a month to receive preliminary instructions on how to study the circumstances and issues of the regional communities in Japan as well as to learn about Yurihonjo City, which will be the subject of the field survey, before they travel to OSU.

For the preliminary instructions, the students are provided with assigned literatures based on which one student will give a presentation at every class, and all participants will engage in discussions on the content of the presentation.
