Interchange in class was held with Akita municipal Daishoji Elementary School, which elementary school students in the Kayagasawa region attended. Currently, AIU students in the PBL course "Community and Environment" are conducting surveys in the region. The 4th to 6th grade students in Daishoji Elementary School (a total of 21 students) visited AIU. After having lunch at the university cafeteria, both university students and elementary school students moved to a classroom and gave presentations. The university students gave presentations of life on campus, studying abroad, and their future dreams, and then the elementary school students gave presentations on learning in the community and thoughts towards integration of elementary schools. A mutual Q & A session followed and all the students brought many energetic opinions and questions and almost exceeded the time limit.
The interaction and exchange of opinions with the elementary school students for the university students is rare and thus was very inspiring for them. Through deeper interaction with residents of various generations, the university students were able to see the community from more diverse viewpoints. Based on the findings through this interchange in class, the university students are now engaged in research topics chosen by each of the student groups.
An article on this interchange ran in the morning edition of the Akita Sakigake Shimpo dated Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The article quoted the comments of both the university and elementary school students who participated in the program.
