We participated in the dondoyaki fire ritual in the Hiraotori district.

The annual dondoyaki fire ritual was held in the Yuwa-Hiraotori district of Akita City on January 19th, 2013.

At the dondoyaki ritual being practiced in Hiraotori, the participants burn the yamahage masks and kera (i.e., yamahage clothing made of straw), which were used during the yamahage event earlier that year, together with the pine decorations and sacred straw ropes from the New Year holidays.

Four students, who also participated in the yamahage event on January 12th, observed the dondoyaki ritual and subsequently conducted interviews on the subject of traditional events unique to the district.
