A briefing session by students in the 2014 fall semester was held. With the cooperation of four farmhouse inns, that are members of Green Tourism Nishiki Association in Semboku City, the students listened to life stories of owners of those farmhouse inns. In addition to the interview survey, the students participated in activities at the farmhouse inns, such as a walk in the village and a hands-on experience in farming and cooking, during a two-day fieldwork on November 22 and 23.
Showing the life stories of the owners with video footage, each of the student groups presented what they learned from them. All of the presentations given by the four student groups were well elaborated and revealed the students' sincere attitude to the life stories. The students learned a variety of things. Some expressed their opinions in terms of their personal problems, such as, how to work in the future, and others critically examined theories or previous studies learned in class, interpreting the definition and the process of community development in their own ways.
Three owners of the farmhouse inns participated in the briefing session by the students. The participants made comments such as "I learned that what we see ordinarily in our way could be seen differently from the outsider's viewpoint. I realized the virtue of the community again."
