Akita International University was selected by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as a recipient of a grant called "Re-inventing Japan Project (Subsidies for Projects for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization)".

Re-inventing Japan Project offers financial support to collaborative institutions of higher education, which design strategic exchange of international students from China, Korea and the US. The grant framework is designed to establish an international higher education network between Asian and the US and is expected to enhance Japanese Universities' presence and competitiveness abroad. The project vision is also to foster Japanese graduates to become global citizens who can play active leadership roles in regardless of their profession or location.
