Professor Alexander Dolin

Alexander Dolin(Akita International University, Professor)

Professor Alexander Dolin began his scholarly career by studying Japanese classics and comparative culture at the Institute of Oriental Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences) where he has been working for two decades since 1971. Then from April 1992 through March 2004 he was teaching Comparative literature at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. His research activity has been rather diversified and covers several related areas of culture: from Japanese literature, ethics and aesthetics to world literature, history and religion, always being on the cutting edge of interdisciplinary studies.

Professor Dolin is an author and translator of over 50 books. A number of his books – published in Russian, German, English and Japanese – explore the history and theory of classic and modern Japanese poetry as well as history and philosophy of Far Eastern Martial Arts, spiritual sources of cultural evolution and the ways of cultural exchange. His works on Russian literature and society issued in Japan (in Japanese) and in Russia have been met with interest both by specialists and by public at large.

He is also acknowledged in Russia as a poet and writer in his own right, being a member of the Russian Writers’ Union and International PEN Club.

His massive History of New Japanese Poetry in several volumes issued both in Russian and in English became a significant contribution to the studies of Japanese literature in the West.

Dr. Dolin regards translation of old and new classic Japanese literature as his lifelong mission. Scores of collections and anthologies in his translations introduced to readers a broad panorama of Japanese poetry from ancient times till present day. He also published the translations of popular novels by Tanizaki Junichiro, Osaragi Jiro, Tsushima Yuko and many others. His work has been widely appreciated in Russia. It also has been recognized by a Special Prize for Cultural Achievements of the All-Japan Translators Association (1995).

Since the establishment of Akita International University in April, 2004, Dr. Dolin has been teaching Japanese Literature and Comparative Culture to Japanese and international students.

内容
The book, being the second part of the fundamental History of New Japanese Poetry, examines the developments in the realm of kindaishi and gendaishi verse of the Meiji – Taisho– early Showa period. The names of the great bards like Takamura Kotaro and Hagiwara Sakutaro, Nakano Shigeharu and Oguma Hideo, Murano Shiro and Nishiwaki Junzaburo , Miyoshi Tatsuji and Kaneko Mitsuharu are introduced along with the names of minor Japanese classics of the time. The concepts of the leading kindaishi and gendaishi schools analyzed in the monograph show the closest interaction of the Japanese authors with their counterparts in the West, which has resulted in the creative fusion of the indigenous and borrowed poetic traditions. The book is richly illustrated with portraits of the poets and lithographs by early modern artists.

内容
The research, which constitutes the first part of the author’s multivolume History of the New Japanese Poetry, traces the process of emergence and evolution of verse in the new forms after the Meiji Restoration. A totally new worldview forged in the fire of polemics on the pages of critical journals paved the way for the innovative aesthetics of the XX century Japan. The eloquent melodic Romanticist shintaishi poetry by Shimazaki Toson and Doi Bansui born from the synthesis of East and West, the lyrical masterpieces by the great Symbolists Kitahara Hakushu, Miki Rofu, Kinoshita Mokutaro and a brilliant constellation of other young talents laid the foundation for the modern Japanese poetry and poetics. The book is richly illustrated with portraits of the poets and original paintings.
