Alumni Voice: Distant Promises and Precious Memories - Yol Ho Sung, George Mason University, U.S.A.
What do you want to experience at AIU? What do you want to become through study abroad?
In this series of articles, we would like to introduce the articles from past exchange students who have completed their studies at AIU. They will share the most memorable experience, what they learned and how the AIU experience helped them now, and what they would like to tell international students who are thinking of studying at AIU.
The purpose of studying abroad is different for everyone, but we hope that the stories of alumni will encourage you to consider studying abroad at AIU as a place of learning.
Here is a message from Yol Ho Sung. He was an exchange student who stayed at AIU in Fall 2018, Winter 2019 and Spring 2019 Semester.
Hello! My name is Yol Ho Sung and I am from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia in the U.S. Fortunately I was able to study abroad in 2018-2019 but what can I say about my adventure in Akita? It was by far the best decision of my life, and I still hold those memories dearly to my heart. I still can’t believe that 3 years have passed but I still remember every moment as if it was yesterday.
What I Learned and How It Helped Me
First things first, you are a student, so academics is very important. I took various classes such as Japanese, religion, introduction to Japanese society, and Kado (flower arranging). Not only did it help me learn more about Japan, but it also educated me culturally. But being at an international school, this might be difficult since you must balance out your school life and social life so be careful!
Precious Memories
To be honest, waking up every morning felt like a dream and every day was a brand-new adventure. Not only does AIU offer amazing courses led by the superb faculty, but there are also various clubs that you can join. My favorite memories were the time I was in the volleyball and Yatose club and engaging in conversations both English and Japanese and connecting with everyone.
Are You Interested?
You should be interested because I promise you will not regret making this decision. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, situations have changed but regardless of it, don’t miss this opportunity. Whatever you make of your trip is going to affect your experiences in Japan/online. Take every opportunity and sign up to everything. Everyone you meet whether domestic or international students are all eager to meet you. By doing this, you’ll make unforgettable promises and memories with new people whom you’ll share deep connections and have everlasting bonds.
